New Sections!

I’ve added a couple new areas to the good ol’ TeamJuchems blog.

The first is the addition of the “NATLAN” section.  Updates to this annual/semi-annual LAN party will appear there, along with pics and videos as they are available.

Second is the “For Sale” section.  Take a minute to read that page, I’ll put in a blog post when I add items to it.  For now, I expect it to be full computers that need to stretch their legs and be put to use by other folks.  With two people, there are only so many computers that can be used in one house.

Happy new year – go ‘Clones!

That was a pretty uninspiring win, but I think the ISU Cyclones will get them however they can take them.  They looked good for about five minutes of the game, but that was enough to put the inept Gophers behind by one too many points.

As we head into 2010, its amazing to look back on how much has changed.  New jobs, new schedules, new classes.  What is great is how much has stayed the same – great family, gracious friends and wife who loves me despite my numerous and likely very annoying shortcomings.

Here is to 2010;  happier work situations, watching more movies, reading more books, creating a more complex home network and playing some more video games while magically becoming more physically fit.  Beyond and above that, enjoying life and marriage!

It is going to be a great year 🙂

Working Downtown

Today marks the one week anniversary of starting my new job at Lawson Software in pleasant down town St. Paul.  At some point, I’ll have to write about that in greater detail.  For now, I am reveling in the downtown work experience.

For those unfamiliar where I used to work, the BAE Systems “plant” in Fridley was just that.  It is a massive 2million square foot manufacturing building whose closest neighbor is huge rail yard and the only food within walking distance was the Aramark caf in the building.  At one point, I believe there were more than 10,000 workers at this building and it was considered out of town.  In my time there, the number had dwindled down to something like 1,000, resulting in a ghost-town-like creepy feeling.  No windows were present in the part of the building where I served my tenure.

Anyway, the vibe here is much different.  Downtown St. Paul seems pretty nice with plenty of shops within walking distance.  Where I work, the Lawson Building, is full and bustling with something like five restaurants and a convenience store inside of it.  I am up on the 10th floor and the set of windows near my cube overlooks a park, the St. Paul Library, the Museum, and finally the river.  Today I wanted a quick lunch so that I would have time to walk to the Waldenbooks down the block – I was down to Chipotle and back to my desk in about five minutes.  I was Zune shopping recently and I managed to find a seller in downtown St. Paul so we just met over lunch to do our business which was very convenient.

Is it all wonderful?  Our commute lengthened by about eight miles (worth 10-15 minutes) one way and parking is expensive (~$6.50 per day.)  The parking situation also makes it tough to justify driving anywhere during the day as that would incur more parking fees.  It is hard to meet non-St. Paul colleagues for lunch because of this, and running home over a lunch time is no longer feasible.  We plan on making extensive use of the bus system to reduce the cost but that really hinders our flexibility just that much more.

In the end, I am excited to be downtown.  It feels different because it is different and I think that in the near term it will be much better.

Now to figure out how to pick up a half eaten Chipotle burrito without spilling it all over my desk…

Sometimes, bigger is better

Craigslist hunting can be a pretty rewarding sport.  Since Kristin is gone and the work situation being what it is, I’ve had a little more stress and a little bit more bored time on my hands.  Those who know me well know how I react to this type of situation: I shop.  Craiglist and the Anandtech forums are both likely places to buy things as deals can be had and there are many different items to peruse and then devise rational for having them.

I’ve never liked the passive subwoofer that the Onkyo home-theater-in-a-box (HTIB) system we have upstairs uses.  Bass should be felt and heard to be experienced and this lil’ guy is woefully inadequate.  Hence, I decided to find a good deal on a used powered subwoofer.  I found a 12″ Mitsubishi sub for $50.  I wasn’t able to find a lot of info on it online because it came out in 1997 or so, other than the fact it was part of a reasonably high end component system.  I was surprised when the lady tried to get it out of the back of her Accord, it was huge!

12" Mitsubishi vs 12" Parts Express Subwoofer

The sound is huge too.  While the parts express sub seemed to find the resonant frequency of everything pretty well, the Mitsu shakes the seats.  In order to test the sub I watched the Matrix lobby scene.  Then I ended up watching the rest of the movie.  Great sub.

I’d forgotten how awesome the first Matrix movie was…

xkcd – why I love the Internet

Every once in a while you might stumble upon something epic on the internet.  As for myself, I just found the webcomic “xkcd”.  It is fantastic and vulgar and so “deep” at times that it is  shallow.  Most importantly, I find it very funny.  It has enough science and sci-fi references that I have recently dedicated a large amount of time to reading through many of them.  Only about 400 or so to go… This one hase been my favorite so far:

Amazingly, that actually made me laugh.

What have you found on the internet?

School Projects, good vs. bad

The difference between a bad project and a good project at school is an interesting line. It is always subjective and sometimes you don’t even know whether it is good or bad while you are working on it.

Take my current school project, for example. My team is supposed to design a hobby garage. Now, that’s fun. Next, we have to do a thirty minute presentation. Ok. On the verification of the garage. Bummer. And there are four teams that are working on the same project all presenting the same presentation over three hours. Brutal.

Can’t wait for this one to be over…

Who’s got the beef?

So, the CRV squats a bit with 800+lbs of beef in the back…  The steering was quite a bit lighter which made driving in the heavy cross winds on 218 a little interesting.

A little bit lowe in the rear end...

A little bit lower in the rear end...

It should be pretty tasty 🙂   It definitely topped off our freezer.  Round or minute steak, anyone?  That stuff just keeps hanging around and embarrassingly a package of ribeyes snuck through last years consumption. I swear that won’t happen again!

Also, I was foolish enough to get the whole brisket in one piece.  Next time I’ll order it in smaller chunks.

Enourmous brisket...

Enormous brisket...

Thanks to Dad (Rick) for continuing to raise the beef that makes this journey worthhwhile.  Next year might be a beef less year from what I have heard as the cattle yard needs some maitenance.  I’ll be more than willing to come down and put some hours in helping to make sure the beef comes back, though!  I’ve spent plenty of hours out there in the crap, what’s a few more?  😛

Metallica

Tuesday night I had to skip out of class a little early, but man was it worth it.  Seeing Metallica in the Target Center was pretty darn fantastic.

I have to confess that Metallica is my #1 favorite band by far, despite the horrid St. Anger release.  I’ve been listening to their new Death Magnetic album since Kristin bought it for me (thanks, babe!) just about everytime I drive anywhere.  That said, I really enjoyed the concert depsite how much they had the bass and drums turned up.  Maybe the aucoustics for where we were (up a bit) were just off.

Of course, I forgot to take a decent camera.  Crappy phone pics will have to suffice.

Blurry pic of them playing...

Pyros!

Pyros!

Thanks to Derek M. and Kevin for coming out for the concert.  I hope you guys enjoyed it too 🙂

If/when I got to another Metallica concert, I am buying a Met Club membership so I have a shot at buying good tickets and probably traveling to another venue.  The Target Center is fairly underwhelming.

iPhone gets features I’ve never used on my BB

So, over at Dailytech (my once a day news resource) they have pointed out that the iPhone is getting support for Google Voice.   Reading through the article, it talks about how long Blackberries have had this support, even on AT&T.  I thought about that for a while… I have an AT&T Blackberry.  A nice, shiny, top of the line Bold which has wifi and the whole bit.  Could I not be using VOIP and Google Voice right now?

Well, I would try but Google Voice is currently invite only which is quite the bummer.  As soon as I either mooch an invite or they open it back up, I’ll be signing up and seeing how it works.

Oh yeah, I guess the iPhones can now send MMS’s despite the ape-like intelligence of iPhone owners.  Congrats.  I just sent my first one ever from my Blackberry to commemorate the occasion.  Again, congratulations.  I know you fought hard to get it.

Week 4 in the NFL, etc.

Whew, so many great games today and we haven’t even gotten to the best one – the Vikings vs. Packers.  🙂  I enjoyed seeing the end of the Pats vs. Ravens game and really enjoyed the entire game of Denver vs. Dallas.  Who would have thought the Broncos would look so legitimate heading into week five, and that Dallas would look so poor?

There is a pretty big bummer goin’ on right now, however.  ESPN fantasy football is broken due to login issues.  Very lame.  I want to see how my rookies did today and I am out of luck.  Pulling for Big Ben tonight as I sat Tom Brady to play him.  I hated doing it, but I figured that the Ravens defense would be a little more stingy.  I am looking forward to the Ravens vs. Patriots post season game, that should be pretty awesome.  Maybe I am wrong, but I believe the Ravens just lost home field advantage in that game and playing if Foxboro in January is huge…

It was a bummer that IA State had the field goal blocked.  So close to that first conference win, and now they are so far away…

Shout out to Dan Tonkin today, who finished his first marathon in literally five ticks under five minutes.  Kristin, the Mooneys and I supported him along the way at three stops but the mental fortitude required to accomplish running 26 miles is nothing short of amazing.

*UPDATE 10/06/2009*

The Vikings beating the Packers 30-23 was incredibly fun to watch.  Kristin watched the game with me, so that was pretty awesome too 🙂
